System for 99 Expedition

Hi all..

I'm trying to decide what I want to do for a sound system in my truck, or honestly if I even want to at all. I have a background in pro audio, but I've never really messed with building a system for a car. I put a KDC-X300 when I bought the Expedition (w/ Mach system, factory 8" sub) earlier this year, expecting to build the build the rest later. I'm a Rock/Metal guy, and am not interested in joining the subwoofer war going on at my campus. Quality over quantity. With this said, I haven't decided if I just want to put in door speakers or go ahead and go all out.

My dad built a system based solely on the recommendation of Crutchfield a few years back in an 02' Monte Carlo.

-Excelon HU (Gen before BT, I don't remember the model

-Polk DXi (690s in the rear, whatever the largest that fit up front)

-Kicker DX600.5

-10" JL W1, sealed box.

We also have a Blazer XTreme with a system not worth mentioning but has a JL JX360/2 powering another 10" W1 but in a slot ported box.

So.. here is where I ask for input

-I'm pretty happy with the Polks, and want at least that quality for my truck. I feel they have a good amount of headroom with that Kicker amp, and will go louder than I care to listen to them. I do find the low mids (like 150-300Hz or so) kind of honky, and tend to back that range off a dB or 2 in the EQ. So.. I'm considering the DXi571s for my truck. With all this said, I haven't been in many vehicles actually had decent door speakers, so I'm very open to recommendations.

-I'm at a loss for 4 channel amps.. Do I need one? I know they add a ton of head room, but I've never heard a system with decent door speakers and no dedicated amp. Like I said, I'm really not looking to destroy my hearing.

-As far as subs go, I'm pretty much in love with JL subs. I have been around quite a few different low and midrange subs; JL's are by no means they loudest, but in my opinion are very musical and handle the kick drum very well. Our sealed 10" W1 definately sounds better to me, but obviously the ported 10" W1 is louder, and honestly I wish the sealed one in the Monte had a little more head room. Would a 10" W3 in a sealed box get an output near the sealed W1, or would I be better off with a pair of W1s?

Sounds like your interested in an SQ (sound quality) build. The JL's are good but there are much better subs for that. I have heard that the IDMAX subs and the IA Flatlyne are great SQ subs. But the main decider of how the sub preforms is the box that its put in. A properly built ported box can be just as accurate as a sealed and have a flatter response.
