The speaker wire is 12 ga and is new, the sub is rated at 400 watts rms, yes I know 1500 is overkill so I have the amp turned all the way down. I don't know what the max wattage rating is.

What is the Model of the JL Sub? Coil configuration? DVC4 Ohm sub? what vehicle do you have the sub in and what type of enclosure and the dimensions and if ported what is it tuned too?

Pull the sub and check the coils with a DMM and see if its within the Ohm limitations. Its possible you cooked a coil or two on the sub
