subwoofer horn design!

IMHO a true Horn is not needed in a vehicle. Unless you are a hardcore Classical music fan and you are listening to baroque music. Just go with a nice set of 12's or a single 15 in a vented enclosure, and leave the Horns to people that have Vans like Frosty (he might even be able to almost fit that folded horn that Acidburn posted.

well...screw the car design

I'd like to build one for my home theater and place it behind my couch

Requirements

#1 it cant be lk 200 cubic feet. The largest I can see it being would be 3-4' tall, 6-8' wide and 2-3' deep. that is in feet...

#2 I dont wanna spend a fortune and would like to be able to use a 250watt plate amp MAYBE 500 if posible (plate amps are already expensive as hell) and have it still get extremely loud, so basically very efficient

#3 Deep and Loud...to emphasize movies such as War of the Worlds (would this deep be possible)

#4 ...I do have neighbors so I dont need it to like kill small animals when theyre in front of the mouth

Imperials are unique that there is no single/double woofer option. If you took out one 15 in those pics, the box would stay the same size. Those specifically are 28 cubes apiece. 62" x 32" x 28" I think.

This answers all your questions:

On one occasion a club owner wanted to hear what one would do in his own place so he called us up. On the spur of the moment we had to take what we had so we packed up a single Imperial, my frequency generator, and an old Harmon Kardon Reciever with one channel blown. Just before we got this call, we had been experiementing with a unique driver arangement. We removed the 15 inch woofer, and replaced it with a 12 inch woofer that was already mounted in a 1 cubic foot sealed cube. The response of the woofer in the cube was 3 dB down at 120 cycles. Basically ZERO bass. We installed this cube into the Imperial with the woofer facing the back of the encosure. The original 15 inch speaker opening was sealed. Installed the response was a bit different. Starting at the same 120 cycles and measuring the SPL at 90 dB in the room we slowly started to sweep the frequencies down until at 28.5 cycles the SPL had risen to 118 dB. That's a 28 dB of gain at 28.5 cycles! I really can't begin to describe what happens at that frequency when you hit that SPL, but it's serious. We saw a mouse stagger out of a crack in the concrete floor and die.

that would have to be one big a$$ box. Heck my box is around 10 cubes and it's cuttoff is 28 Hz //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eek.gif.771b7a90cf45cabdc554ff1121c21c4a.gif

That's a picture of two FOLDED horn enclosure. If you can fit one of them in your vehicle, go for it!
I could fit an Imperial Horn in the back //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Id prefer it to be about 5 feet wide, 2 1/2 feet tall, and 2 feet deep. How low could I extend with a box that large? I 'd end up adapting it as a piece of furniture and setting it behind our couch.

No one could tell you for sure.

Sounds like the wicked one is right up your alley.

I,ll post some pics of it when I get home/don't have any plans for it, I built it when I didn't know anything about speakers, and I just modified it a few weeks ago and put my Brahma it, it's as loud as hell on 200 watts. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Haven't put it in my car yet tho //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif too big and heavy

the wicked one? what one is that

with a box that size could I achieve 10hz or lower extension?

Would 15hz be a lot easier than say 10hz or lower? (would the box be much smaller)

Would it be bad if i had the mouth of the horn facing away from the audience? We would be on a couch and it would be behind us facing away. Since its frequencies are so low it wouldnt matter...correct? or am I totally wrong?
