Sub level-amp gets louder/sounds cleaner at lower level. (not bass level)

So from what ive read on Kenwood excelon units. The sub level controls the voltage going to the sub out RCAs.

Yet im able to play louder and cleaner bass when i have it set on zero vs when i have it on 9(of 15)

I adjust the gains on 9. Just doesnt sound proper at all.

Reset gains on 0 sub level. Sounds much much better.

Any idea as to why this is. Why in the world would lower voltage be better?

It has a clipping light on it. I clip much sooner off the high voltage obviously. Thats i set my gains. Run HU volume to what i want, then turn raise gains till clipping light kicks in, then back off and call it good
