Sub Enclosure in SUV ('01 Explorer) - Sub and Port firing directions?!

Hello,

I have someone that will be building an enclosure for me, so I only have one shot at this:

I will be having two Sundown SA-12s in a ported enclosure, and I just need to finalize where I want the subs and ports firing. I was going to probably play it safe and have both the subs and port firing towards the rear of the car (towards the hatch) unless there is a tried-and-true design in SUVs (like subs fore back and ports up, or ports to the side, etc.

Any tips?

Subs up and port back with that size box. I've played around a lot with explorers

Thanks for the response. Any reason why the size of the enclosure effects the driver placement? Just wondering, I'm trying to learn. So that's what the 2nd gen ex's like eh?

Subs up port back for suv's. It works good for them.

subs up ports back works best in most suvs. the only time it doesn't is when you're either too close to the roof or hatch. then you run into some loading problems.

most will debate this but i've actually found that as far as being loud to the ear, it barely matters on port and sub direction. numbers wise though it's around 2 dbs louder subs up and port back as opposed to subs up ports up or subs back ports back

Good to know. Sounds like for SPL purposes that is the way to go, but what about for purely SQ?

Sub up, port back. I have a 3rd generation Exploder. It works well.

If you can get the subs and the port both on the same baffle and as close to direct path propagation as possible to the listener (not using the vehicles walls to direct it), this would be the way to go for SQ (generally).
