sub and amp questions. newb

hey my friend has a mtx thunder4500 in a vented box that he got off ebay. he also has 2 amps. one for the speakers which are stock (VW GTI) and 1 for the sub. to get it to sound good he has to turn it up all the way, not sound wise but on the stereo he puts the bass at +15. i want to get something that i dont have to run that high. i was looking at mtx, kicker and alpine. i was told the alpine type r is good, im looking for a 15 inch. whats the difference in a vented and non vented box? also could i leave the stock amp for the speakers and just get amp for the sub? sorry for all the questions i dont know anything im just trying to learn. i dont want to go to any crazy crazy expensive brands.
