Sub / Amp Issue has me stumped - Chris

Good morning,

I have a Focal sub / amp combo unit in my 2011 Hyundai Sonata. To hook it up to my stock radio, I did the following. I ran a fused B+ cable from the battery to trunk. I ran a shorter (approx 2 foot) B- ground wire and used an existing stud in the trunk to connect it to. I purchased one of those cheap line out converters. I tapped into the rear door speaker wires located in the B pillar and ran to trunk. I crimped a jumper wire to the B+ and B- to power the line out converter. I used the line out converter's remote out to turn on the Amp / Sub. I hooked up everything correctly and it worked fine for years. All of a sudden, it stopped working. The sub seems to be getting power (sometimes) as the red light is on but it does not go to green. Sometimes no light. I figured the cheap line out converter went bad and replaced it with an expensive LC2. Hooked it all up and it started to work then nothing. The line out converter power light blinks red. My son has a powered sub that I know works and I put that in the car thinking perhaps my sub amp went bad, again nothing. I measured the voltage across the battery under the hood and then measured the voltage DC at my B+ / B- wires in the trunk and got about the same so seems I am getting power and min voltage drop. With the radio on I also measured Voltage AC across the speaker wires and seem to be getting signal. Help?

Two subs, same issue, two LOC's same issue, seems to me that there is an issue upstream. Have you tested the amp disconnected from the signal source using your phone or a laptop and a simple 3.5mm or USB -C to RCA cable? Have you checked to be sure the ground is sanded and the nut has not come loose? How about checking the speakers you tapped into, any possibility of a short?

Getting a good voltage reading does not mean good power transfer. You could read 13.8v out of a 24 AWG wire. Recheck your amplifier's ground and fuse at the battery.
