title says it all... i need to kno which is better for a sq system; a ported or sealed enclosure??? or does it depend on the specific subs

btw suggestions on sq subs and were to get them? im lookin for two 10's or 12's (tryn to keep room open for cargo)

Should hit up SI's new forum and check on either the Mags or the BM's. I will be getting just 1 Mag or two BM's and doing a sealed enclosure to save room. Actually they say to stay sealed with the Mags. Then BM's, I cannot remember. Good prices on them too, especially compared to what they used to be.

I also perfer sealed, but my buddy's Envoy is ported on two Pioneer SPL subs and his is very clean and very loud! Just depends on install.

I'm going to be building a 6 cube sealed box for my 2 mags soon. Just picked up the MDF and supplies.

Only thing better than oversized sealed is IB //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

I take that will be the old mags right? Because they call for 1.2cft sealed IIRC. I heard of going bigger sealed, but not that big, lol!

2 15's. call for 2.5 sealed, going with 3 each. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Box is going to be heavy as hell. 60lbs from the mags, then a box that is 48x16x20 with a double top baffle (Up-firing)

FWIW I just built my very first ported enclosure. It's 1.3cft @ 28hz and houses an IDQ10V3. I can't beleive how good it sounds. It's every bit as tight as my old IDQ12 was in it's .85cft sealed enclosure... just louder.

I firmly believe that a well designed ported enclosure can sound very good... I know mine does.

Small sealed with alot of polyfill was the best I have heard . I guess it depends on the car/setup.
I think that pretty well sums it up... there is no cookie cutter solution that is going to provide for perfect SQ in every vehicle, and in every setup.
To start with, way too much emphasis is placed on the subwoofer with regards to the SQ of the system. Really, if the rest of the system is done correctly, all you need is a sub setup that will cover two octaves at the most -- and retain flat frequency response across that bandwidth. Whether it takes a ported box, a sealed box, IB, or any of the above with parameteric equalization is going to vary from system to system and from car to car.

Still, with that said, a typical car's transfer function will match up best with the natural roll-off of a sealed enclosure. If you can figure out there that transfer function starts, and then find a sub to fit that transfer function, you've conquered much of the battle. Again, it isn't the perfect solution for every scenario, but the majority of the time it does the trick.

Go ported, tuned low, and EQ the bottom end down. "Sloppiness" and "tightness" are completely about mastering frequency response. Ported and tuned low nets you the advantages of a ported enclosure (although space can be an issue) while EQ'ing low frequency response down removes the bloat that often results from pairing such an enclosure with your vehicle's transfer function.
