SQ Setup Questions

I'm going to do an sq setup in my car and wanted ya'lls opinion on it. I've pretty much got the fronstage set and wanted to decide on the sub setup. I'm going with all RD equipment, and please no debate on this brand vs that brand. What I would like some guidance on is which RD sub would be best for SQ/SQL and the box design. My car is an 08 Pontiac G8 GT. The car comes with 8's on the rear deck (which will be removed for this setup). What I was thinking was either a 12" Sonance or Alpha Max. The sub would fire through a large pass through in the rear seat (12X16") and be sealed from the trunk. I was thinking of porting the enclosure and firing the ports through the holes left by the 8's. I'd talked with someone with the same car as me and he said this worked well for sq in my car.

RD Audio and a ported box firing from the trunk... what about this system will be SQ beyond you calling it that? Just wondering, as you are not exactly following a traditional game plan for a SQ setup.

It doesn't have to be a ported box, that was just one suggestion. I'll have a 3-way setup in the front (6.5, 4, & tweet) with 250 watts rms to each side. My plan is to do the processing with an RF 3sixty.2. I have to keep the factory h/u because it has the HVAC display built into it. I am definitely open to suggestions for my build, but will be using RD audio speakers and amps.

I talked to Steve last week and he initially said a sonance, so I'll probably just go with it. However, its pretty much whichever I want to go with. I just want to get a sub that will put out really good sound, but get loud when I want it.

SQ setups usually have sealed subs which is all I use ported is way to bassy and lose.
nah, not true. some of the best sq setups have ported boxes. dependant on build quality.

OP, why all RD? not that it is a bad thing. but the best system will come from the best equipment, not brand

I don't think I can really say what I'm going with until its out, but it is RD. Steve is giving me an opportunity to put a competition sq system in my car, so that's why.

the best SQ cars have ported enclosures????

Ported boxes have an inherent flaw for the SQ world that sealed boxes dont... group delay.

Low-tuned ported boxes can have a fairly flat anechoic response, but once mated with the transfer function of vehicle they usually end up with a bottom-heavy response. Sealed systems have a natural roll-off function that mates well with the transfer function boost, displaying an over-all fairly flat in-car response that requires much less EQ'ing to get a truly uniform response curve.

Just make it easy on yourself and go with 2 RD sonnance v2 12's with 4 cubes at 28hz.

It's pretty flat and as stated will be very big on the low end in the car; requiring some

eq to tame it. Unless you like it and I suspect you will.

All he can do is plot the average delay and try to make up for it with T/A

functions on the HU or some other processor, it's not going to win any

championships, but it should sound good to most people.
