Speaker wire as Remote wire

A friend asked me today if he could strip one side of the speaker wire off and use the other side to add to his remote wire. I told him to just cut off the bad portion of his remote wire but he insists that I ask if the speaker wire can be used as a conductor from the remote wire to either the headunit or the amp.

Yeah I use speaker wire for remote wire.
