I guess i've been through a lot with these rainbows recently..

The first midbass that was damaged was because of water in my doors, so I had to take that out. i'm just running off the one now.

i havent done a single thing different since the first one went out, but I was just driving down, had it at the volume i always keep it at (50/62 at 60% gains) and i hear it distort pretty badly, as i freak out and grab the volume button to turn.. it shuts off.

I run home, take off my doorpanel, inspect the speaker, touch the reverse mounted magnet and... I burn my finger. It was amazingly hot.

After inspection.. i turn the car on, and it turns back on. i leave it alone for a bit, then come back to head out. Keep it on around... 30/62? never went past 40. and then it shuts off.

never turned back on since.

any ideas as to whats wrong? already checked out all the connectors, the tweets are still running smoothly, so it can't be an amp connection.

The speaker could be shorting to ground internally, or it could be an amp problem. Most likely, what's shutting off is the amp...

Try disconnecting the speaker wires, to that speaker, at the amp, and measure the resistance (ohms) on the speaker wires, with a volt-ohm meter. Should be around 3 or 4 ohms between the two wires going to the speaker, and NO CONNECTION (ie, open circuit or infinite ohms) between EITHER speaker wire and chassis ground. If that's OK, then it's likely the problem is in the amp...

Regards,

Gordon.

asked my friend today, specializes in car's electrical systems.

he said the exact same thing about the shorting to ground.. he said water couldve gotten in my wires and caused it to short the speaker.

guess im replacing both speakers now :[

but ill ask to borrow his DMM and check the ohms.

Yes. Only thing is the leads will be encased in resin. Keep in mind that this is an assumption.

I agree with every one above. OFC is much better. Copper is a much better conductor than aluminum.

Speaker ratings are generally a thermal/mechanical limitation of the drivers. Music is dynamic, not continuous. During quiet periods a song, you...
