Speaker reccomendations

Alrighty, so when I wake up in 6 hours, i'll come back and make the appropriate edits. and have pictures.

Firstly, the car. It's a 1987 Chevy Suburban Western Hauler 4 door. It's got barn doors, and four bucket seats, one bench seat.

Speaker placements (Afaik) are in the dash, and behind the rear doors (under the windows)

So far all I have is my new toy, and the two things I know about it is it has 2 6x9 Infinity Kappa speakers in the dash, and two kenwood 6x9 in the rear (behind the rear doors) next to the bench seat.

What I'd like to know is how and where should I place a set of tweeters (What kind also, if any reccomendations) and if there is anything I should change out of it.

Basically i'm looking for a cheap, but decent sounding system (later on i'll add my own sub and amp) This gets loud, but at super loud (above 60% volume on the deck) the bass starts distorting the speakers. I'd like to know if adding tweeters and cutting down on the bass output to the speakers will help.

What is powering the speakers? You're probably clipping the amp and/or surpassing max excursion on the woofers. Lowering the bass my lessen the distortion some. If these speakers are not amped then that is probably the biggest issue.

I don't see tweeters helping much with SQ, you would already be lacking in bass and additional tweeters will just unbalance the frequency response even more. Plus with tweeters already in the 6x9's you will have some highly distorted sound here I bet.

Ideally I would look for some decent components for up front and amp them. This way you can place the tweeters wherever they sound best and they will blend well with the midrange.

you need to high pass those speakers. They dont like the low frequency. If it was me I would invest some time and move the speakers into the front doors. Wont cost much and those doors will hold just about anything.

The best bang for the buck would be to add sub(s) and amp(s)... do a search on "rear fill", rear speakers are not necessary and in most cases detract from a natural front sound stage... following that logic, it could be as simple as adding a 4-channel amp and subs, and hooking up two channels of the amp to just the front speakers you have, assuming you have an aftermarket head unit with RCA outs.

Just changing out the speakers, you might be disapointed... sure, a component set will sound different and a little more acurate... but the subs/amp combination will extend the system range, clarity, impact, volume, efficency... honestly, it will do a lot more and should be your first step.

After that, when you have some more money and are ready for more improvement, then we can talk about upgrading speakers to components.
