Speaker mounting - 6.5 in a 6x9 opening

I bought a set of 6.5" component speakers for my front doors but the door has 6x9 speakers.

I could make an adapter from MDF to hold the speakers in the 6x9 opening or I could just mount the 6.5 in the 6x9 opening. Will using an adapter to seal up the opening make a difference considering the door isn't exactly a sealed enclosure to begin with? I have enough clearance that the MDF adapter isn't necessary for the woofer to clear the glass.

I know I can make the adapter easily. I have the MDF and access to a band saw, scroll saw, and jig saw. I have done a little bit with MDF so I'm not completely inexperienced with wood.

Would it make any acoustic difference with or without the adapter?

X2-It will make a difference. You are installing these IB in the door basically. So you want to do your best to seperate the front wave from the back wave.

The pic iceteebone posted is what you do should resemble once complete with a good install. This will optimize your ability to get the most out of the mid IB in your door.

MDF adapter. i did this in my accord a while back when i put alpine type r 6.5 components in the 6x9 holes in the back. its easy to do n if ur running speakers with a bigger magnet, it can give you a bit of extra room, depending on the car.
