Speaker Distortion

Hey guys, I just replaced my factory HU with an Alpine HD149BT, and I'm hearing speaker distortion and severe loss of clarity (the proverbial "blaring speaker" sound).

So my questions is:

Is this distortion due to low quality factory speakers, or the surprisingly lousy 18w RMS of the top-of-the-line Alpine deck?

I really didn't want to install a separate amp for my door/back speakers! Hoping I could get away with getting some higher sensitivity speakers

If you can't fix the blaring annoying aspects with the equalizer and it gets worse as you turn the volume up then you need to get an amp. Some day we'll have more power inside our head units, but for now that 18W per channel runs out of gas pretty fast.

Why do you say the Clarion is better? Looks about the same to me, except the Alpine has an easier plug and play system
The Alpine is plug-and-play for Alpine head units. That's all. The Clarion runs cooler, makes more power at 1/10th the distortion, it has ground loop isolation, and it's cheaper. They took their time bringing this to market.

Cheaper? I can get the Alpine for 100 bucks, where can I get the Clarion for cheaper...? And you're right, only for Alpine head units - and I have the HD149BT.

But hey, I'm still open to persuasion! Just really liked the plug and play deal the alpine has. No need to go through splicing wires again...

Cheaper from authorized dealers. Once product gets out through gray market channels and the price cutting begins that changes things.
