speaker blowing?

Overheating the voice coil. The easiest way to overheat a voice coil is to send it a clipped signal. If the loc has an adjustment on it, it has to be set properly so it doesn't clip the signal, and of course the amp also has to have the gain set properly.

 
Is this in the rear deck? Are your amps mounted in the trunk underneath them? Maybe the smell is coming from the amps (or something close to the amps), and the smell is coming up through the rear deck, making you think it's the 6x9's making the smell?
