i was going to use the gain setting formula with my dmm, thatd be 42.4v for 1800 watts right? i thought a clamp meter basically was a dmm, just with different style probes? is there a different method im not aware of?

Clamp meter allows you to measure amperage.

Volts * Amps = Watts

You can't really determine power output with solely a DMM, as your speaker's impedance is not 1) constant and 2) predictable (as it will vary by an undetermined amount based on enclosure, frequency, etc)

there really ought to be something in the gain setting tutorial about this, if there isn't already. a lot of people have more amp than their woofers can handle.

clamp meters cost alot more than a dmm, do a search on google.

simply put.

You set your gain with a DMM only... your generally getting ~half what you think you are.

Not really. A DMM is only good for measuring voltage. A O-scope would be needed to really determine clipping. And without knowing the actual impedance of the drivers in-box, you can't really determine actual wattage either. That is, unless you used a clamp meter to measure amperage.

okay squeakypoo. i think the SS RL-P would be better due to the fact i've heard very very very good reviews about them (except from LS1pimp).

The type R is alright, but its definately not king.

i think you should go for the RL-P ma man.

How do set up an oscilliscope to measure clipping, with a high pressure mic, or do you connect it to your amp some how? I have a few o-scopes lying around, might as well use them.
