Sound deadening q

Scenario: 2005 Dodge 3500 quad cab w/ a cummins that we use as our work truck at home

problem, i hated the wimppy sound of the stock exhuast, so me and a friend decided to remove the muffler and just straight pipe it, it sounds amazing, problem is, if i'm pulling a gooseneck/5 wheel trailer and get up over 70mph, the level gets very noticable in the cab, it's too loud, under any other conditions its fine, but loaded down w/ a load you can't go much over 65 without it getting annoying

how effective will sound deadening be if i do the entire rear half of the cab plus possibly the front doors, so that's all 4 doors, rear wall, and back half of the floor, i dont' want to have to put the muffler on.....it doesn't have to get rid of all the sound, just lessen it enough to be livable...and i'm willing to do as many layers as i can get in there

ok you can do one of two things deading your truck with a few layers of whatever you are wanting to use to cut down the noise. or you can take it to a muffler shop and have them take out the resonator and put the muffle back on w/o a resonator. trust me it will give you that nice sound but cruizing it should cut down on the annoying sound

putting the muffler back on in any way shape or form is the last option for me......i'm really most interested in peoples opinions on the effectiveness of sound deadening...if adding 3 layers of that everywhere is going to help then i'm going ot do it without a doubt

Sound deadening and sound proofing are two different things. I recommend buying a proper muffler. You can get better sound without having to run straight pipes.

well, i'm assuming the only way it's cutting down on noise in my scenario is by cutting down noise overall......which i don't want.................

i don't want to sound like an ***....but i really dont' want to have someone cut open my muffler......much less pay them to do it.....is the deadening going to help

There's two types of sound deadening; Mass loading and Barrier loading.

Mass loading stops vibrations and resonances in panels and works via adding mass to panels. Mat based deadeners like Dynamat Extreme, Raammat, SS Damplifier & Damp Pro would fall into this category.

Barrier loading is what actually absorbs and reflects airborn noise. Open and Closed cell foams such as SS Overkill, Ensolite, etc fall into this category.

Liquid deadener is sort of a good combination of both. It works as an effective mass loading sound deadener (though some would argue not as effective as mat), but also has good barrier loading characteristics (much better than mat, maybe not 100% as good as foams).

For the purposes you want, you would probably want to use a combination of all three. Something like a layer or two of mat deadener to cut down on any panel resonances, the follow that up with 2-3mm of liquid deadener, then 2 or so layers of foam.

Honestly a very good idea would be to give Rick of Raammat and Anthony of SecondSkin a jingle on the phone and see what they suggest. I would, personally, get Raammat sound deading mat and Ensolite foam (sold by Raammat), then some SecondSkin Spectrum for the liquid deadener.

not to jack your thread b/c I'm sure you can use this info too. Where is the cheapest place to buy raammat?
Only place to buy it is directly from Rick @ Raammat, e-mail addy is on the website. He sells some on his ebay store aswell, username I believe is "raam". Other than that, post up a "want to buy" in the various for sale forums and see if anybody has any laying around they would sell you.

Also, Rick gives a $20 discount if you are a member of ECA.
