Maybe the previous owner used that roof material that smells and peels off with heat.

Stinger road kill is a good value and does the same as Dynamat, if better value can be found with other names mentioned here then go for it.

 
Sorry, but I feel it is foolish to think (regardless of product) that the applied area should not be cleaned and prepped. Does not take too much effort and ensure better contact with the adhesive for a longer lasting application of the product.

I usually just wipe it with a paper towel to get any dust off and then go from there...quick, easy and it's a huge ***** to pull the deadener off lol
