Solo X 18 Box tuning / port area help

I have a 18" solo x. wanting to make a new box this weekend. The current box is a low end monster but tuned too low i think. I don't want a really high tuned box, box now has changeable ports and one is 55hz, loud but not what im looking for exactly. I think with a new box, I can still have great lows but be alot louder. here is my current box specs

outside box size 39 1/2 x 22 3/4 x 25

Net 9.279 ft3 , includes port/sub displacement

port area 79 sq in. (too small i believe)

port length 17 3/4 (14x5 is port size)

tuning right at 28.5hz

I can maybe add 1-2" depth , otherwise those are max dimensions. I was thinking with a larger port area (100-150 sq in?)and length , box would be 8.5-9 cu ft net and a tuning around 35hz. Power is 2400rms. in a 1999 4runner suv. Current configuration is sub up , port rear on driver side of vehicle. Does anyone have any recommendations on the best configuration and tuning/size for my car? Thanks alot for any help you can provide.

Just came up with one, same external dimensions,

10.596 cu ft gross,

7.778 cu ft net after port/sub displacement

tuning 36 hz ,

L port 20.5 x 7 x 27.5 length .

143.5 sq in port area.

If i add 2" to depth , gives me about 1 cu ft more volume with 35hz tuning and same port area, would i notice a difference from 1 extra cu ft?

Keep in mind that sub has the cone area of a pair of 15" round subs so 8ft is probably adequate but on the smaller side. I don't care what Kicker sais they work in, these things want a big *** box. Also more port area would help and IMHO I don't know why you'd need to tune that low. I'd keep your current tuning or even go a touch higher.

Wherever your port is firing, make sure you have at least a port width between the port and the side or rear wall of your car. Porting to rear or side seems to work well in SUVs sub up or back.

**** , i was reading your response and it didn't make sense, went back and looked at my post , sorry i mistyped. My current tuning is 28.5hz which is fun to shake the car apart lol . i don't have any room to port to the side, just rear or up. I have about 10" now from back hatch to the box.

With the new box I'd do somewhere in the 8-9ft^3 area and tune around 32-33hz. That will give you some more output for sure while still retaining the ability to play low. And yes, your port area is a little too low. Shoot for somewhere in the 120-140in^2 area with the new tuning.

thanks ,so how about i reduce the last planned port to 20.5x 6.5 , thats 133.25 port area. keep same external dimensions and allows for slightly smaller port displacement. so it would be right at 8 cube, 34 hz, sub up, port back on driver side. Is there an advantage to which side the port is on?

so almost twice the current port area and 6hz higher tuning, that should be a pretty noticeable difference right? otherwise worth the hassle of building and demounting/mounting this thing lol

Couldn't agree with this more. My 2 12 Solo Xs are in 14cu., keep as much box as you can, especially running 2500watts to it. I'm not good with box tuning but here's what I have: (Each of my subs are separate due to unforeseen circumstances) Each sub has 96 sq. in. of port, and I'm tuned to 36hz. I would recommend 34-36hz for the 18. You already know how nasty low it can get, but you can seriously hurt people in the mid 40hz range (peak will of course depend on your vehicle).

As I really can't offer you more than that since you aren't adding power, and don't have the room to expand your box here's cliff notes: keep box as big as possible, tune mid 30hz range to thoroughly impress all your friends and yourself, while still being able to meter decently.
