The chassis of a car is usually metal, and it's connected directly to the negative battery terminal. So any metal in the vehicle that's connected to the chassis is more or less connected to the negative terminal of the battery.

Or do it the right way, its really up to you...

I would just find a nice metallic surface within 3 feet of your amplifier to sand off the paint of and then run a screw into to ground your amp (use a ring terminal on your ground wire). (assuming that is what you are doing) As long as you know you are not drilling right into the gas tank you'll be just fine.
