So, I need to replace some speakers

Unfortunately, I have 4's all the way around. Weak. The two in the rear don't even work, or theyre not hooked up... or something. The fronts are alright, but they sound a bit unnatural, they lack depth. They also lack anything under 300hz or so... Of course, I don't expect bass from em, but they need SOME substance.

So what are some decent 4" speakers? 4" components? Im not sure what all will fit as far as depth goes, as I can't seem to find much info on the factory locations. I think the factory speakers are like 1.8" deep or something like that. I'll eventually be putting a small amp on them... and I'm working on designing a center channel system to fit under the radio.

Before I upgraded to a component set I used a set of 4" Infinity Reference-series two-way coaxials in my front doors.

I got 'em off of eBay for like $27/shipped, I think?

Anyway - for the size speaker they were they were better than simply tolerable. Much better than the OEM speakers they replaced, to be sure...

I used the internal crossover in my HU to highpass them at about 90 or 100Hz as I recall and they performed admirably off of 25 watts or so from the amp I used on 'em.

hmm... I can use my HU's crossover. I also noticed a pair of bass blockers on them. SO, I think theyve been replaced before. Im hoping to do something like a 5.1 system. I want to build a sub/midwoofer somewhere under the radio, under the dash, and have the 1/2din pocket under the radio vent it. Like a bandpass, but with a small speaker.

They're 4" speakers. Cost isnt an issue, as a vast majority are cheap, until you get into like JL and MBQuart component sets.

Unless you really want 5.1 you don't need a center channel to have a center image. My truck has no center channel but you would swear there is one there. Another thing, to have true 5.1 you will need a processor and an optical cable from your dvd to your processor. Also there are only a handful of cd's that are recorded in 5.1. Personally all a center channel does is narrow the sound stage in my opinion. Just a waste of money on another set of cables, speaker, and amp. A good set of components in kick panels aimed correctly with some time alignment will work wonders.

Kicks are out of the question due to limited leg room on top of having a clutch pedal in the way. I want a center stage solely for the "wow factor" on top of adding more midrange to my music. Under the dash really isnt the best place for speakers, ya know?

If you get the right midrange you can mount it almost completely off axis and it won't take up much room at all. And kick panels are probably the best place you can put a set of speakers because that is the location where your pathlengths are closest to each other. Also there have been alot of guys that mount the midrange directly in front of the seats firing towards the windshield. I'm sure all you are wanting is something that will be loud anyway.

If you are going to have them up high I would recommend using these then.

The L3 would work pretty good because it is small. The L4 is pretty awesome too if you have a little larger space to put it. Frequency range is amazing.
