I had a similar experience...no one hurt though and by the sounds of it yours was a lot worse since you got hurt...some years back I was getting gas in my S10....I had a car back into my truck...While I was getting his info...a drunk backed into the other side...well the store manager was outside with us getting the first guys info...She tried to help us get the 2nd guy to pull over he was in a drunken stooper...and refused and left the seen...we took his license plate and info on vehicle for the police....guess what...They couldn't do anything on the guy who left and the other guy that hit me didn't have insurance...I was 22 at the time...so i had to pay two deductiables...my insurance went up....for something that wasn't my fault.....and no my vehicle wasn't parked in any weird way....It was at the pump where it was suppose to be...that is why I didn't move it from the first guy till the police arrived to see where it was parked...

These ****ers think they're slick...they really do.

So, we called my insurance company to let them know about everything, and told them the plate number of the other car. They gave us a call back a few days later, turned up nothing in their database for that plate number...hrm...odd.

So, I give my lawyer the plate number and he has his secretary run it in their system, same thing...nothing.

Well, we all find this odd since the cop at the scene told us the plate matched...anyway, my lawyer does some digging, and finds out that those scumbags went into DMV the next morning, and turned in their old plate and got issued new plates.

So we finally found them...notified their insurance company of what is going on and just waiting to hear back from my lawyer.

Haven't been to work in 3 weeks now too.

I hope everything works out for you man. I just got involved in an accident myself recently. Some idiot motorcycle tried to pass me to the right as I was turning right and he ended up hitting me. Its complete bullshit though. I live in a college town and happen to be attending that college. So of course, these cops think Im just some punk *** kid and they are believing everything this *** hole on the motorcycle is saying. Even though the motorcyclist fled the scene before I could call the cops and lied about the whole thing to the cops (I had 2 witnesses). Even after that, the cops dont even update the case or anything. And just because of a few mischosen words I used, this ******* is getting everything he wants. So he pretty much took advantage of the fact I was a college student all the way from the way I handled the situation (not calling the cops right away) and him knowing the cops wouldnt believe a lick of anything I said. My family is considering hiring a laywer but we may not just because of the way its looking already and my family is well off enough to risk taking it to court seeing as how we would end up in the same system that sees college kids everyday. I have since bought a camera to put into my car (the physical aspects of the crash and a parked vehicle are part of what the ******** lied about). Anyways, I hope your case goes a lot better than mine.
