Slapping Sound (Overexcursion?)

I have two 12" Assassin's in 1.25 ft^3 each (sealed). The amp is a Profile AP1000M (500W x 1 @ 2 ohms, but it probably doesn't actually put out that much).

When I set the gain above 2/3 I start to hear a slapping noise from my subs. To me it sounds like they're bottoming out. The noise can only be heard when sticking my head in the trunk, when I'm in the car it sounds fine. According to WinISD my cone excursion should only be ~10mm (xmax is 15.5mm), so is this actually my subs bottoming out, or could it be some other problem?

What will it sound like if I clip my amp? I recently tried setting it according to the sticky in the amp section, but couldn't get a reading on my DMM.

Right now I have the gain set about half-way, and there's no bad noises, but it's also not as loud as if I turn it up more.

I just ordered a Phoenix Gold x600.1 which has a reputation for putting out 800+. I've head the Assassin's can handle 500W each, sealed on a daily basis, so I figured 800W combined shouldn't be a problem. Is the new amp going to make this problem worse? Or will it go away because I'm getting clean (unclipped) power?

It could quite possibly be a clipped signal. Hard clipping sounds pretty bad. Of course it could also be bottoming out as well...... basically bad sounds = bad. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

anyone figure in tinsel slap?
had my GF's moving pretty good free air and they didnt have any tensile slap.

i doubt it is bottoming out (though, never rely on winISD for anything but port and Q calculations)

clipped signal, 2/3 is mighty high unless you have some low volt preouts.

Just turn your gain up till you hear distortion...slapping, eh, not good...turn gain down till it goes away. I just hooked up an SE 12 in a sealed box in my truck, direct switch from my SX 18 in 8 cubes ( I can barely hear the 12in. compared to that lol) and it slapped like crazy...just turn it down till it sounds good.
