Skittle's one of a kind box/build

im wondering what in the hell you did to the box to gain 5 db?

Was it a combination of wiring down the amps, in addition to a few port changes with the box at a certain frequency?

Please tell. BTW I love the box, It looks great. Definately love the fans and use of aero ports.

Your thread name brought back memories of a car I owned a few years ago named "SKITTLES" due to its multi colored paint scheme.

I really like your install. It reminded me of an install that was featured in "Car Stereo Review" in the Sept/Oct 1991 issue. Its featured car was a 1989 convertible Mustang Saleen, its system was mostly constructed of teak. You may be able to contact them and see if they have a copy that you can get. They had some really cool ideas of building grills and such with wood that looked really trick. I would send you mine but it has one of the only full length reviews of my Sony Mobile ES system. I don't have means of doing scans or I would. I've built several boats, my last planked decks and many parts that I custom made mimicking metal or plastic parts.

You should do a search on Ebay for exotic woods, it would be cool if you incorporated a contrasting wood for various smaller parts. You'll be able to find some really nice figured woods that will give your install a nice touch. Also, your bright finish, look into table top epoxy's; they are rather inexpensive and will give you that really deep looking finish. Also, marine varnishes like Epifanes, Pettit, and others will give you a real durable finish much more so than any you can get from a home improvement store. I would put up to 15-20 coats, many of my boats have yet to be refinished and some are going on 5 years.

I registered SMD so I could vote for you... Keep up the great work!

i added some cones under the subs and on the wall behind the ports to help direct airflow out of the ports. but they are small and im sure didnt help much. i found out that due to ohm rise i was only getting 1000w before. i wired down to .5ohm and it rises to 2.5ohms giving me 3500w. so 3x the power is what gave me 5db. i didnt change anything else but i will be playing with the box soon.

Flyonwall9:

thanks for all that info. this was my 1st time working with stains or making something look this nice. i only did 3 coats of varnish, its holding up good so far but im worried that i didnt do more. i had no job so finding better wood was not an option otherwise i would have had some ebony in there. ill research all that stuff you told me about though. maybe next time i could make something a little better. there is a lot about wood working that i still have to learn. any more you want to tell me, im all ears.

thanks for the vote, they are doing something different this month so im not running but maybe next month.

By no means am I an expert. I just really enjoy working with wood. The

more exotics to me seem to be much easier to work with, though it

can get costly if you screw up.

Your much like me, working on a budget. I have to really manage my

funds tight being a disabled Vet. I'll give you a little tidbit to streatch

your budget. Go to a really nice cabinet company, and go through

formica chips/samples. You can turn up some really nice veneers

that would be perfect for adding wood accents. Then simply varnish,

but do so with those marine varnishes I suggested. They will make

the wood look really deep. Sand between each coat with 600 grit

wet/dry paper from HomeDeposit. Apply your varnish with those

.50 cent foam 2" brushes you can buy at WaldoWorld. Your going

to want to do this after the part has been glued in place, you don't

want all that varnish to crack. You can easily make your own wood

kit for your car, it would be custom to your own stain color. Pretty

trick!

I will be happy to answer any wood working questions, tools, finish

you name it. Just PM if I don't see it here in your thread, I've got

nothing but time brother....

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

i got myself a clamp meter and found out how to get the power im supposed to be getting from my amps. my old score was with only 1000w
Shit happens sometimes. I thought I was as loud as I was gonna get, then I turned the gain up some more. Sounded much clearer and louder when all was said and done. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/cool.gif.3bcaf8f141236c00f8044d07150e34f7.gif

lol this was a little different. i had my gains set correctly but i had 6x ohm rise. so instead of 2ohms i was getting 12ohms. i just fixed the rise problem and now it only goes up to 2.5ohms

you guys know those holes in the back panels in my car? they are finaly getting covered up.

now call me lazy but i didnt want to deal with bondo and all that sanding to make the panel perfect. instead i used some cotton batting. i think it turned out pretty good.

ya... this one has a little wrinkle in it. oh well.
