Silly But Serious Question (Vets/Lab Owners)

i got a 4/5 year old yellow mix and he, along with our chow mix bites all the time. i think it could just be fleas though (theyve been treated and still doesnt work in case you smartasses wanna say somethin stupid). the lab got kinda bad last summer. the sores right above his tail got kinda infected //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

Ok, well i have a 10 year old black lab that has been having a major issue w/ scratch, biting and licking for the past two years. We have been to our local vet dozens and dozens of times. He states that its a common problem with labs but i cant stand to see her in pain. She itchs all day almost, barrly gets any sleep because she itchs so bad. She has itched, scratched and chewed atleast 30% of her hair off and has sores from doing so. Any one here ever had this problem? Any vets that could share insite? We have tryed everything it seems and nothing seems to work, or even remotly help.
Thanks

Corey
my lab is the same age and has done the same thing for years.

we paid $400 and had blood work done, it came back that she is allergic to 'dust mites'

so i was giving her injections 1nc a month for the last 18 months, it kinda worked but not great.

now we give her small doses of 'prednazone' (sp?) every 3 days.

no more scratching and lots of sleep.

a lot of people dont like long term use of prednazone because it can damage the liver etc, but given the choice between constant scratching and lasting 5 years, or dieing a bit early and being comfortable for the last 3 years i know what i choose.

kills me when my dog doesnt sleep because she scratches all night and all day

small doses of prednazon (10mg every 3 days) and shes good.

get it from the vet, cheap $20 for 6 month supply at that dose^

eeek! my doctors perscribed that to me after I had cancer.....using that drug led me to having both of my hips replaced and my liver almost transplanted because of severe damage. Prednisone is nasty, nasty shit...//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/mad.gif.c18f003ab0ef8a0d9c27ca78d77a6392.gif

i actually have a black lab that is about 13 years old..he however does not have this problem, yor dog actually looks identical to mine without the marks. But to be honest your dog does not look very happy in those pics

would you be happy if you itched all the time, couldnt get any sleep bc you itched and had bald spots because you bit where you itched? are you insinuating that the OP doesnt care about or for his dog? if he didnt, why would he consult an online forum to find a way to make him better?

fucking asshat, kill yourself

hey ******* **** you get a life if i were him id put the thing down and not let it suffer....hes the one doing wrong by making the ***** suffer not me so go **** a dick u ****ing ******

Our lab used to lick his front and rear paws, he had fairly large sores by the time we had him put down (at almost 16), he probably started between 8-10. The vet never found anything to fix it, and it certainly didn't kill him.

Just saying, my dog did it too.

Well this threads pretty old, but our vet had been giving her prednizone for over 2 years witch was sappost to help but had little to no effect. Last week she was dignosed with diabites. Come to find out it came from the medicine the stupid fawking vet was giving her.

My dachshund has/had the same problem. He bit/licked his back and around his tail until he had no hair there at all. Vet first said just allergies and prescribed a shampoo for him. We also gave him OTC benadryl that helped some. Now the vet said he had red mange and prescribed some medicine solution. It stopped him from biting it so bad but he still gets bloody spots occasionally. What I've found that is helping him is 2-3 bathings a week and after every bath I put some teatree oil on his back where he bites. It helps the infection that he got there and im sure the stuff is bitter enough he doesnt bite it either. Besides teatree oil smelling so **** strong it works wonders. But you certainly know when he comes in the room,LOL. Perhaps some of that will help man. I hope your dog gets better!

have you checked her allergies? Id say close to 80% of dogs that itch all the time have some sort of environmental or food allergies, these can come out at anytime and start irritating so dont tell me you have "fed the same food for the whole life" becuase it doesnt matter, get her allergy tested, its expensive (~400) but it should pinpoint the allergies, then you can simply eliminate them from the diet. (if its a food allergy.) Good luck.
