Should I use a 10" or a 12" sub?

Today I bought an Alpine MRP-M500 Amplifier (300W RMS 4 ohm). I'm stuck on whether to buy either a 10 inch or 12 inch subwoofer. I'm interested in "feeling" the music, having a punch like it was an actual bass drum I guess you would say. I don't want it to be too excessively loud to people outside my car (ie. I dont want to wake the neighbors). I listen to mostly rock/alternative and some rap (of course where the sub will be nice). Which size of sub should I purchase? Also, are sony subs decent quality?

Thanks!

- It doesn't matter which size you buy.

- Sony subs aren't very good.

- The MRP-M500 does 500 watts rms @ 2 ohms.

There are tons of subs that'll suit your needs, but I'd recommend the Alpine Type R. It's a pretty nice "starter" sub that doesn't cost a fortune. Make sure to buy the 4 ohm dvc model...

^^^This.

Some more details on your car, goals, and types of music that you listen to will help decide your sub box.

It doesnt matter which one for quality, but of course a 12 will be louder because you have a larger surface area.

It would be a sin to put a Sony sub with an Alpine amp.

You might do better ordering something rather than going to Best Buy or the likes.

Kicker and Rockford have good subs that wont break the bank as well. If youre looking for the best bass reproduction, look in to a couple 8s

Because 8"s, no matter what 8" or how it's installed, will always get a score of awesomeness in sq comps.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif

OP: Just find a decent sub for your amp and install it right. One 12" would do you good, or two lower power handling 10"s or 12" depending on the room you have. DO NOT let Best Buy install it for you lol.

Thanks a lot for all your replies. I am pretty limited because I can't order off the internet, I can only buy in stores. I highly value quality, so I'm probably going to take my back my sony sub I already bought (or borrow it from walmart for 30 days until my next check comes, hehe). I'm sure alpine would be a good brand, but how about Kenwood subs?

I would stay away from Kenwood as well...How come you can't order from the internet?

Well I set up my system today using the alpine mrp-m500 and a sony xplod 12" 350 rms sub. Of course I have no comparison but it sounds pretty darn good. But I might take the sony back. How much of an improvement would I see using the same amp going from the sony to an alpine type r? That's assuming I can get a friend to order for me from the internet. Thanks!
