Should I build this dresser?

1" would be overkill I would go with 5/8 or 3/4 tops. Also dont use mdf for the drawers use plywood so it wont be so heavy.
Would 3/4 be enough weight to support all the weight? I mean, you have to realize this dresser is over 5 feet tall and 2 feet deep (I don't remember how wide). It's a big b*tch. I originally said 1" because that's a bohemoth dresser. At least, I think.

And I'd also hate to build the whole thing, then fill the dresser and hear *CRACKKKK*

funny, cause my roomate is doing the exact same thing.. makeing it out of mdf, then he is haveing it custom painted wood grain.... so far he has a scetch up on a pad of papper.. kinda can't wait to see what it look's like when he is done...

wish i had enough closet space to put a dresser in my closet.. i mean i do.. but i hang all my t-shirt's up...

3/4 would definetly be enough. Why are you going to use mdf, go to home depot and get a couple sheets of 3/4 birch.

Honestly, MDF is the only wood that came to mind. I don't have much knowledge of wood... to be honest, all I know is MDF and Plywood

Yeah a sheet of birch plywood is like $30 at home depot, i think. Just go to home depot and look around. Since its going in a closet i guess looks dont really matter much, so you can use whatever you want. Another thing is you could use different wood for the drawers, it's not like they are going to hold much weight. That could save you some money and lighten up the dresser.

That's true, but what do you think would be good for that size? That's big for me... and should I do cross braces on the bottom? Just nice simple X's?

I thought this thread was about motorcycles when I saw it. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

How long/much are you going to use this thing. If you are looking to build a quality dresser to use for awhile hit me up I can help you out on the construction. *Yes I have/do build furniture.*

Seeing how it's going to be permanently [at least until forcefully removed] attached to my closet, it has to be good quality. But, no offense, but I'm not paying anyone to do it. I don't have the money. But if you're going to give me pointers and help, I'll love you for a long time //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

I didn't mean for me building it for you. I meant helping you. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

the 3/4" mdf will be plenty strong. My 18"D x 24"W x 72"H bookshellf is made out of 3/4" and each shelf has roughly 40lbs of books on it with no bracing. There is a tiny bit of bending on one of the top shelves, but that's because it's had stuff on it longer (library increased a lot when I got into college). Had it for a few years now and I got it for like $20-$30 at wal-mart. You shouldn't have any problems with 3/4" mdf unless you build the think with duct tape.

And since you're building it on your own, I would put handles on the thing so it's easy to move if you want to.

Personally, I'd go with some real wood though. If you're going to put the time in, you might as well make it to look nice and make it so you can re-use it if you move. Just go to home depot and see what kind of wood is on sale and start working. Going to be kind of hard to build it properly without the right tools though. Wouldn't bother if you can't do it the proper way. Kind of a big project to tackle without tools and experience. If I were you, I'd just build a cabinet. Two doors are going to be a lot easier to put on than all those drawers.
