Shallow mount sub owners. Are there any?

I have a 99 Dodge Ram Quad Cab. Was hoping to one day put some subs in the back under the rear seats. But if you know the truck, you know there is very little room. Not really interested in the custom enclosures because I've heard MTX thunderforms aren't that great and JL stealthbox is more than I want to spend.

Soooo, that brings me to shallow mount subs. Now, I've searched and read several threads about them but mostly just people suggesting them. I haven't read detailed reviews of the members here comparing shallow mount vs shallow mount nor shallow mount vs "regular" subs.

I know numerous manufactures make them. pioneer, Kenwood, RF, Soundstream to name a few. JL make a ~13" but that's out of my budget. I've also heard of RE and there's a local dealer. I may give them a call and ask some questions but I'm really hoping someone here has some shallow mounts and can give some opinions on them.

I mainly listen to Rock music so I want something with a tight "punch", not boomy. Was thinking a pair of 10's if possible but am not set on any particular configuration.

Also hoping to spend ~$150 per sub or so and would then probably have to get a local shop to build the box.

Leaving the amp decision until I decide what sub(s) I go with.

Any suggestions?

polk audio sells a shallow mount sub but they're mountin depth is like 4in for the 10in subs, they sell for like 120 a piece, i had the 2 12s and they put out some good sound. they arent meant for ported enclosures either though, but i don't think you're lookin to go that route anyways.

oh and for some reason the SVC models handle more power.

Thanks for the replies so far.

bborey - I'll look into the Polks (didn't even know they made them). As far as raising the rear seat, I've also seen some people that say they have done it but I haven't seen detailed instructions. Also, one problem I have read about is that when it's raised the back part doesn't "latch" into the back wall so the seat will fall forward. I have 2 kids that sit back there so their safety is #1. Not saying it is definately unsafe but it sure sounds a little iffy.

5.3- I forgot about memphis. I have also seen people mention them but it's always kinda like you say. They have just heard that they are good.

A good set of 8s( Kicker L7s, Sundown E8s, etc.) would do well. They wouldn't have to be shallow mount and they would have enough cu.ft. to sound good. There are prefab boxes available on line that fit under the rear seat and are hardly noticeable. I just installed two Kicker L7s in a underseat box in a '04 GMC crew cab for a friend and was surprised with the low-end, very impressed. There are two Kicker L7s in the classifieds for ~$225 shipped and Sundown E8s are listed in multiple threads.

Are Kicker L7's the square ones?

I have seen the pre fab boxes online but it seems that all of them are made with thin wood. Where did you get the box you used?
