Settings gains for active, and...can someone tell me why I would need an RTA?

Two things.

1. You don't *need* an RTA to adjust your active system, the point of this thread.

2. RTA will not guarantee SQ. Look at home audio loudspeakers, all the manufacturers claim victory because they engineered a proper design, yet

if you audition all those loudspeakers, they all sound different. If you made

your car install 'technically correct', you aren't guaranteed victory.

What if you adjust your system and it doesn't sound good to you, then what?

Your only course of action is to re-adjust and tune by ear, if that doesn't work,

then you need a redesign.

Many people get dissuaded from active because they think there is some

kind of passive crossover magic on component sets when in fact, the majority

of the time when you make the conversion to active, it has more pros than cons.

We don't want to make the active issue complex that *needs* electronic gear

to execute. That is just a trinket to play with.

I never said "don't bother if you don't have an RTA"

Matter of fact, I said;

You can do these things by ear....

The point of disagreement came in later when we started discussing the usefulness of an RTA. Which, IMO (and the opinions of many others), if he could gain access to an RTA it would be extremely beneficial to him during this process. It's not a must, but it would be very useful if he could get access to one.

No one said to rely strictly upon what the RTA said without regard to what your ears say, or to tune only with the RTA and without listening to the system at all.

I've said in this thread that it's a great tool to use in addition to tuning by ear.

^^^^Clearly that's the best way, duh.

Of course, I have the second best way. It's an upgraded Trunk Monkey with the sound engineer option. In addition to security, he sits in the trunk while I'm driving with headphones and a sound board adjusting everything real time. It's the wave of the future. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif
