setting the gains on my amp

[2001KX 10+ year member]

i have a hifonics 1500

my question is what wattage do i go by when setting my gains.

i know my amp is 1500 watts rms but i know my subs will never see the full 1500 watts.

i have it running at 1 ohm .

so 1500*1=1500

then the square root of 1500 is 38.729

so using my meter in the speaker outputs should i go by this voltage or should i try to approximate the actual rms of my amp to the subs?

or does it really matter that much?
