Setting my gains (yes, ive read the sticky)

ive read CA's sticky and JL's tutorial. 1 says to zero the EQ and the other says to set the EQ first. which should i do? and also, my MBQ's are lacking the midbass, so should i crank up the EQ's low end or is that not a good idea? TIA

ok, well ive tried to set my gains but im having problems. I am supposed to be looking for a 17.3V readout on each channel right (JL 300/4 with 4ohm load per channel)? Well my DMM has been reading like .06V. I dont know whats wrong. I had volume at 3/4 and gains halfway up (which is plenty loud), but im still reading nothing. My DMM only has settings for V, ohm, and mH (i believe). its V settings can be either AC or DC (it "figures out" which it is). and its definatly on V not kV or mV or anything. and i had it hooked up to the positive and negative of 1 channel. am i not doing this right?

Sounds like you have it hooked up right, and it kinda seems like it is on a DC reading if its only reading .06V

you could carefully stick the probes into a wall outlet and see if it detects the AC or not.

no test tone. i cant find a 1khz test tone, like JL suggests, anywhere.

the DMM is supposed to automatically detect AC or DC, so its not something i can change.

set the EQ on how you have it just listening to music. If oyu have the low end cranked then crank it.

ok cool. i just ran the new rca's today. i had ANOTHER bad set. so thats all good now. hopefully if i find time tommorrow ill set the gains.
