this might be a dumb question but do i have to set the gain and bass boost when the car is on??? and do just use a screwdriver and play with it

Yup, car on. It will be better if you don't use the bass boost at all. Read the tutorial below for whatever else you need.

You are going to need a meter to measure the voltage. You can get a cheap one for $20 or so at Home Depot, probably even Walmart.

gotcha--- and when i turn the screw both ways it wont ever come to a stop-- is it suppose to be like that

What screw? The gain knob? It should stop, twice actually. Use the gain setting tutorial mentioned above to figure out the desired voltage. Put in your test tone, turn to the desired volume (without clipping, with subwoofer control at the normal level), put the DMM on the speaker terminals with no speaker wire attached. Then turn the gain knob slowly until the voltage is at the right level. It is not as complicated as it sounds, but reading that gain setting tutorial will help you greatly.
