Set my gains right.......FTL.

Alright so i set my gains properly. Well lemme tell ya. Wow. Not impressed. Im running two Type-r 10s (4omhs)off a m1005. I went with four ohm subs because i planned on running three, but ****it i cant lose any more trunk room. I didnt even hit really. Yeah i sounded clean but jesus, two more bumps to the gain and it was bouncing my windsheild wipers. The two tens HIT. Most think i have at least 2 12" back there and ive blown dudes with 2 15" out of the water. (of course these are people that dont know crap) Seems to me that one of two things are true, either 1: that extra 150W must be where the money is if i were running to 2omh subs, or 2: i just went too small on the size. So, live and learn. Im thinking that maybe i should start looking at two m1005s and two 12" type-Xs. Thoughts? It sucks because with a little more juice these tens HIT. I dont wanna burn em up to were i cant sell up or something, but i mean it was totaly SQ. No bump at all.

Set them with the 3 to 1 ratio. You'll get more "bump" out of them.

Find the clipping point of your deck. using a 0 db reference tone.

Then use a -3db tone and set your amp to the voltage you require.

EDIT: its -10db tones not -3db //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Okay first, i dont understand the whole 3:1 thing, and second im using boxes i buildt to alpines recs. 1.3 cubes ported. I think the tuning is something like 38hz. I used a 0db 45hz tone. me thinks.

-10db test tones!!!

anyone care to explain how to find out where my HU clips at (with 0db tones)? do i need an o-scope? or can anyone with an alpine HU tell me where it clips at?

i set my gains with the HU at 25/35 with -6db tones and i could hear clipping when i played some lil' jon stuff, so i set them with -3db and it sounded clean.

maybe i'll have to try -10db tones and get some extra bump //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

EDIT: and to the OP, i'd at least try -3db tones, they could get you the extra bump you need!

also, what voltage did you set them to? and what voltage does it read with the couple extra clicks you mentioned?

uhhhhhhhhh are they wired at 4ohms? If so wire them at 1ohm
Huh?

Wait can i do that? will the amp handle it? Lemme do some digging!

EDIT:

Alpines site doesnt so a 1omh output. Should i give it a go?

With the Alpines, the internal amplifier starts to clip at 23 volume (0 dB tone) and the pre-amplifier outputs start to clip at 30-something (forget exactly) ...
-10 dB tones in the hands of a novice is a recipe for magic smoke, IMO ...
well, i have the internal amp off, and i'm talking about the subwoofer pre-out here, so i guess setting at 25/35 is OK for no clipping there.

what do you mean by the next comment? is that just meaning, if you set with -10dB and then always turn it up past that point it will cause damage?

i will NEVER be turning it past 25/35, will it still cause problems?

he's saying that becuase you physically can turn the volume knob to the point of clipping, people who are inexperienced can blow subs. Honestly I think 3:1 gain is fine as long as you don't plan on listening to mostly bass mechanik and test tone. If your just looking for a bit of extra volume once in a while for songs, you'll probably be ok.

i will NOT physically turn the volume knob up past that point. i like listening to a lot of lil jon, young jeezy, etc.

i just set my gains using a -10db tone, and it BUMPS! way louder than before! but i can hear some clipping on certain songs, but ONLY if i open the trunk and stick my head back there. from in the car it all sounds great!

do i need to worry about a little bit of clipping? (i usually listen somewhat loud, so i'm probably going to be on the verge of clipping quite a bit.)

oh, sorry about thread jacking by the way. i made a new thread, but my questions are better answered in here. as for the OP's question, i say wire it up to 1 ohm and try it out. most likely it will just go into protection once you turn up the volume //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif if not you're good, if it does, no harm done, just not your easy answer.

his amp doesnt match his subs....gets max power at 2 ohms and subs will only wire to 1 or 4 ohms........I would say sell either the amp or the subs and get the one that matches.....
