Sealed vs. ported?????

I have one JL Audio 10w3v3-2 in a sealed box at 1.12cu ft. 500/1 JL Audio amp. In a montero. Gains all set at half. Seems like speaker is bottoming out!! Still sounds good,but I feel I can get more out of what Im working with!! Should I go ported!!!!?????????

"Gains all set at half" - this is your problem

If the sub is actually bottoming out, meaning you've looked at the sub and it's looking like the cone is trying to jump out of the box, you're causing damage. The bass boost or EQ knob is best left at 0. The low pass filter might be fine where it is, but that can be addressed later. The gain or input sensitivity knob is not your volume knob for the amp. It's to get the input section of the amp matched to the voltage coming in from your head unit. Turn this knob down and I think you'll find the bass sounds better.

If, after changing the settings, you want louder bass you need to change your equipment. A ported box designed for the sub and for the sound you want will be louder to your ears without changing the amplifier or the sub. Something to try that won't cost anything is to change how the box is aimed and move it around.

I had sealed, then had a Mass Loaded Transmission line box built. (Ported but just bigger box and longer port) Day and night difference it was great sounding when sealed but i was always pushing it to its max, I needed more volume. Now it rarely gets turned up past half it's max volume. Max volume now rattles my van to pieces. Slightly different sound, but not better or worse, just a little different requires different tuning.

I don't get why anyone would run sealed in this day and age. Pointless......

It's either ported or 4th ordered, that's it.
