Running 3 different cone sizes in one install

My good friend has been saying for 15 yrs he wants a setup with different cone sizes to hit a variety of frequencies hard.

ie. a 12" 10" and 8" in the same car. Is this a good idea in your personal opinion? If each had a separate enclosure with plenty of air space and tuned properly to the spec. of each woofer.

Or one enclosure with separate chambers and ports.

I figured it's been discussed before but I just wanted some opinions from some members here on if it's a good idea and the best way to execute it.

Separate amps? processing ect.

I'm thinking a

eD13.av2 on 1500@RMS in my 2.4cube 33hz box.

And and XFL10 in an enclosure tuned higher on 1200W RMS

And then a juicy 8" in a box tuned even higher or sealed w/ 500-800W RMS to handle that tight bass in the higher frequencies.

What are your thoughts on this? TIA

The "8s" that "hit higher frequences" are MIDWOOFERS used for MIDBASS. You don't just stick two different sizes of subwoofers together and expect them to sound good. Look into doing a 4 way active setup if you want to do this the right way. Subwoofer + midwoofer + mids + tweets

obviously this friend does not work in the industry. also, clearly this doesn't prove to work b/c you'd think in that 15 years that others would have jumped on this if it was a tried and true setup. it doesn't work and of all the setups (3) that I have seen like this, they all sound like ****.

tell him to go for it. at worst he'll be known around town as the dude with all the different size speakers. street cred. lol
I know right? I saw this guy one time that had like 2" speakers on his dash, 6.5's on his doors, and a couple of 10's in the trunk and just laughed at him as I rolled by with nothing but 15's in my car.

If he wants to try it, go ahead but I would agree that you have a better chance of making two matching size speakers sound better than the mix of 3 (I'm a fan of simplicity). The biggest risk I see would be cancellation or phase issues since the 8,12,15 will each respond differently, i.e. they will hit at slightly different times which can cause cancellation. The fun thing to do with this might be to try and avoid this issue with some really well chosen crossover frequencies with a steep slope, like 24db or steeper. For example, put the 15 in a really big sealed box and feed it only 40Hz and below. Then let the 8 or 12 handle 40-80. That would avoid the phase issue and be a fun experiment at least to see if you could get maximum output in those 2 or 3 chosen bands (depending on if you go with a 2 or 3 woofer setup). In the end this might fail but it would be fun to try.

No. Just, no. Pick one size, do a good enclosure, it will sound much better and you won't look as dumb.
