Rms matcing amplifier to subs?

How important is it to match the rms ratings on the amp to the subs for a daily beater?Or should the amp be close to the subs rating but not go over?

I guess I should give some more info....what if the sub will handle 2x the rms that the amplifier is rate for?

Then you make the enclosure larger to compensate for the lack of power you have.

Go over for people who knows what they're doing, shoot for under if you're installing it for abusive customers.
