RL-P sealed vs ported

im buying a dual 4 ohm 12" rl-p. question #1... will 1000 watts rms be too much if used with care? Qusetion #2 I read about the subs great sq,but is that only sealed? I want the low extension, as well as a little louder than sealed,so I was thinking 2 cu ft, tuned to 28 hz. please let me know how this sub performed in various boxes

i had RL-p's sealed and ported. Sealed definitely better for rock music more kick to it. Ported of course you will get good output and a reasonably linear frequency curve

i myself prefered sealed. my ported box @ 28hz had great sq, caught all the frequencies accurately, but once it got to my tuning, it would really* unload.

imo, it all comes down to what kind of music you usually listen to.

i mostly listen to music with very complex basslines so i opt for sealed. however, i do switch boxes occaisonally when im in the mood to really bump =P

as far as watts go, i ran my 15" with 600 watts rms and it was loud enough for me. got a 141.5db on the TL (playing music, not test tones) and it really tore up the rear door latch on my explorer.. 800 rms was as high as i went - the extra watts didnt really make a big enough difference for me. this was on a stock electrical system with no sound dampening.

hope this helps!

I've got mine in a 2 cuft box @ 28hz. It sounds really good! Although, i've only got 400 rms runnin to it @ the moment.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

you do not need tons of power for the RL-p

excellent sub, great price, I prefer larger ported for mine, I have tested it with all different amounts of power and at the moment it is getting 800+ watts in 2 cubes

upper end will still be there; the larger enclosure size will just increase your low end extension and enclosure efficiency.

for my 15" i preferred sealed as i noticed that near tuning in a ported enclosure, the increase in group delay became quite noticeable. of course, i was able to improve this a little bit by going with a lower tuning, but this meant a larger enclosure for the response curve i was shooting for and i just ended up scrapping it for a 4th order bp and a sealed enclosure.
