Hi all! Here's my first post.
I recently unpacked a bunch of old gear while cleaning out my garage and for the past month I've been reading message boards and reviewing audio equipment. I've been out of the game a long long time as you can see from the equipment I have. I wanted to create some sort of audio hommage to some of my favorite brands, however, after reading and reading, I realized that while the anmps I have still seem to be top notch, the speakers are a bit out of date.
20 years ago I had 2 sets of Boston Pro 5.4's. and 2 Boston 10.4's. I went to a few stores and listened to the Focals, Herts, and a few other brands. I really loved the Hertz. just my taste i guess. They reminded me a lot of the Bostons. I liked the ESK165L.5's, so I guess I'm going to with those. However, I noticed that component speakers have jumped quite a bit in price on the high end. the BA Pro's used to be high end, and they were around 300/set. Now there are sets that go up to 1000/set. They seem to be higher in power consumption. If I get the Mille1650.3(about 1k) set for the fronts, they might be a little under powered, but I think I should be able to run them. I just would need to be willing to spent an extra 700 per set.
Now for the first question.... Are these sets just more power hungry? Are they a way to keep up with the latest subs on the market? Or do they actually sound better at lower volumes. Anyone have any experience with this? Also, are components the way to go in the rear? There are currently stock locations for two sets of components.
I'm holding out for the Mile2500.3 Subwoofer. Just one! Need the back seat for the little ones. I actually tried the Punch 150 on a JLW7 12" (I asume @ 1.5Ohm) and believe it or not, I pounded the hell out of my old Trooper, but that was a 3 Ohm sub. I am a little concerned that a 4 Ohm might not extract the same amount of power out if the Punch 150HD. I could try a different amp, but I just can't bring myself to part with the idea. I'll try the sub and if It doesn't work out, I'll just downgrade.
I plan on using the Punch 45HD for a center channel. I really want 5.1 sound so if anyone has any suggestions for a signal processor, that would be helpful. I would love it if there were a HU out there with 5.1 and a center line out, but I just cant find one.
Well there you have it. Let me know if I'm missing anything. Thanks for reading!
