Refurbished or used?

I was wondering...what makes an amp need to be refurbished? Do amps just die after a while or what?

And when they are refurbished, what happens to them to make it better, are parts replaced?

I am trying to help a friend with his first setup, and he doesnt exactly have a high price range, so i need to know if refurb amps are good, or should i tell him to buy used?

BTW...i was thinking about a viper1200.1 refurb...

Apperantly many of the Viper refurbs were cosmetical problems. When an amp is refurbished, it is because of any reaosn. Wether a person dropped it and broke the board or ran it at too low of a load, if it can be repaired and the company wants to, they do so and badge it as refurbished. I believe they replace whatever needed making the amp virtually brand new minus cosmetical problems.

A refurb is a piece of equipment sent back for warranty repair. It was fully repaired/tested and sent out to be distributed for re-sale. It is in a sense better than used. You get a limited warranty and it has new parts that are guaranteed to be working. Basically a brand new unit.

I have one refurb item. Runs strong. Had it for about 5 months.
