Recommended Fuse Amperage?

So I have a Hifonics BRX1600.1D running at 1,200RMS @ 2Ohms through 18ft of 4 guage wiring. The kit itself came with an 80A fuse and when it blew I just kept putting more 80A fuses in there. I've had the system for about a year and I've only blown 3 fuses. It's not a problem for me at all as it takes maybe 5 minutes to change one.

My question is, what fuse SHOULD I be using? According to some websites, I should be using 2 guage cable instead and I figured I'm probably using the wrong fuse too since some people recommend 150A.

How come I barely blow an 80A fuse then? Am I not getting the full potential out of my system?

Here's the wiring kit that I use.

wait are you blowing fuses or not? First you said you kept replacing the fuses

then towards the end, you say your barely blow an 80a fuse

that confuses me

anyways, upgrade to an 100a fuse. If you're blowing 80a fuses, you're pulling more than 80a through the wire which is why fuses keep blowing

I am blowing the fuses, which is why I replaced them.

I said "barely blow them" because I've only gone through 3 in a year. That's like once every 4 months which seems to be a rarity to me.

I will look into getting 100A ones though. They are only a dollar more.

Your brutus has 2x 80amp fuses in it (that's 160amps). 4 AWG power/ground is too small for that amp - especially at 18ft. You need at least 2 awg, 1/0 would be best.

Put an in-line fuse within 18" of the battery. When using 2 awg wire, fuse it at 200amps within 18" of the battery. For 4 awg use 125 amp fuse.

Read this... FUSES

Hifonics overrates their stuff. You are probably getting between 800~900 W RMS into your sub if blowing 80amp fuse. Only way to know is to clamp it. You really need bigger wire regardless.

Steave Meade actually tested Hifonics and it came out very well. Passed his test with no problems. I don't know if I can physically run 1/0 because it's so thick, but would I see any increase in performance? I did order some 100A fuses to replace the 80A ones I currently use.

Did it pass in certified or dynamic? Most amps will pass dynamic, that don't mean much. That's how rockford test to get those over rated birth sheets. And was it the same line you have?

At 2 ohms 4 awg is adequate for that amp -- not ideal maybe, but shouldn't be the cause of any problems. Knu specs that wire for 100A at 20'. So switching the fuse out for 100A is fine, and should eliminate your occasional blow fuse problem.

The reason you're not blowing the fuse more often is because an amp's current draw playing music is MUCH less than the spec'd power would indicate. An amp that can do 1000-1200w at 2 ohms on a test bench is going to produce less than half that on average at full volume. Instances of output that actually exceeds ~1000w will be rare and very short term.

I'm actually surprised you're blowing that fuse at all. I would guess it has to do with some degree of clipping.

I've been running around 1500w rms for a few years now. I use a 100A anl fuse and it has never blown. Feeding a d-block with a 60A fuse for an under-rated 1000w rms sub amp and a 40A fuse on a bridged 4 ch doing around 500w.
