Around $100 - $200. Just something that can get loud off of a $200 Pioneer receiver from best buy.

Recommendations?

This. He might be able to snag a pair of Klipsch Fortes from someone who doesn't know what they have for that price, but it'd be tough.

Those aren't floorstanders, but it's about as good as you're going to do for $200 and still have a flexible setup.

$200 would also be enough for a very good full range speaker and horns, but I wouldn't recommend them for everyone.

don't know if you can get them anymore, but pioneer has/had some great bookshelf speakers...... s-h252 series

I run the 252b-k on a sherwood receiver right now.....it gets crazy loud and fills the apt with sound.
