Questions on “needed” power

First post from a major lurker…

I’m buying an amp to run my new sub. I have questions about needed power for an Alpine SWR-1042D (TYPE R) that will be in a .66 cu ft box. Box is already purchased. The sub is RMS 500 watts (Peak 1500 watts) and is Dual 4 ohms.

I have not had a dual sub before and I want to get it right. So am I looking at approximately 250RMS, 500RMS, 1000RMS for clarity and a clean sound? After looking on 12volt’s wiring wizard, it will be hooked up in parallel at a 2ohm load from the amp. The sub has to do a little bit of it all. I know using the word “Needed” will drive some crazy so… I am more SQ than SPL, listen to everything from pre-war blues, to 70’s rock, metal, to contemporary blues, ambient music, what my Pandora calls “Chill/Down tempo” throw in some rockabilly…you get the idea, I’m all over the place with styles. I need to be able to dial in some thump once in a while.

Fronts will be getting a "matching" sub, they are Focal access 130a1’s and the rears are currently RF P1692 punch’s used for some fill. I’m not a big fan of the 6x9’s and they will be replaced with Focal 165ca1’s within the next month. I was always an RF fan until I put in the Focal’s: unbelievable difference. (Not trying to start a war: YMMV)

I am strongly leaning towards JL amps at this time; either the JX series which would be more appropriate as it’s a daily driver, not a competition contender, or save a little more and go for the Slash V2 series. I do not think my ears will be able to tell the difference, but the slash series look crazy good. I am very open to suggestions on other brands and needed power.

The rest of my posts won’t be this long! Thank you for any suggestions…

Ken

get somethin thatll do 600-800 at 2 ohms and youll be fine.

I can personally attest to the fact that slash amps are very good amps; if youre not on a budget, i say get the slash. otherwise pretty much any quality amp will do. you wont tell much difference

you could get a 5 channel with plenty of power for one 10" sub, i wouldnt recommend putting 800 rms on a 500watt sub as someone previously stated, it may do ok on that much power for a little while but the driver will definately fail prematurely. maybe a jl hd 900/5, it will give u 100watts x4 for your front stage and fill, and 500x1 at 1.5 to 4 ohms for your sub, nice clean look, 1 amp, one set of wiring, easy install
