I have two Kenwood KFC-W3011 12" Subs. Here are the specs from Crutchfield.com.
12" subwoofer with 4-ohm voice coil
stainless steel-coated polypropylene cone with rubber surround
power range: 50-400 watts RMS (1,200 watts peak power)
frequency response: 25-800 Hz
sensitivity: 90 dB
I currently have a Kenwood KAC-7204 two channel amp powering the subs but as I've read others complain about it gets way too hot even with the cooling fans and being relatively new to car audio systems I was wowed by the 1,000 watt max power which I now now really doesn't matter. I'm looking at buying an Alpine MRP-M650 amplifier from a friend after I return the Kenwood amp to best buy. Here are the specs from Crutchfield.com.
mono subwoofer car amplifier
400 watts RMS x 1 at 4 ohms (600 watts RMS x 1 at 2 ohms)
variable low-pass filter (50-200 Hz, 24 dB/octave)
tuned Bass EQ (0-12 dB bass boost at 50 Hz)
subsonic filter (24 dB at 15 Hz)
MOSFET power supply
CEA-2006 compliant
STAR Topology (minimizes internal noise and prevents ground interference)
speaker- and preamp-level inputs
gold-plated screw terminals
fuse rating: 30A x 2
So my questions are as follows:
- I have no clue about how to figure ohms. I know the subs each have a 4 ohm voice coil but have no clue what that means. Will the amplifier power 400 watts RMS at 4 ohms or 600 watts RMS at 2 ohms?
- Each sub is rated at 400 watts RMS. Does that mean they can take 800 watts combined? If not, how many watts can they handle? I realize the amplifier isn't that powerful but I just want to know for sure how much power these subs are supposed to be able to handle.
- Any other comments or suggestions on this system would be helpful as well. I realize it's not top of the line but with the new amp I'm hoping it will be sufficient, especially for the money spent. I got the subs mounted in the box for $190 since they are a discontinued item and I am buying the alpine amp for $80.
