Question Re: 12w6v2

Hello,

I am looking to put some new audio into my 1998 jeep grand cherokee. I understand JL is overpriced, however it is a brand i have come to trust with subs and amps so i am looking to put a jl sub/amp combo system and have a few questions:

1. What is a better setup for sound quality - 1 - 12w6v2 with a 500/1 or 2 - 12w6v2 with a 1000/1?

2. Will either require a new alternator/capacitor/second battery to run effeciently and not cause any problem to my jeep?

3. Depending on your answer to Question #1, which enclosure would be best for my vehicle, the local shop here told me bandpass is better for suv and hatchbacks or any car where the subs are not inside a trunk and ported for trunk systems. I hate the local shop here and will not be buying anything from them but it did get me thinking as to what enclsure would be best for these subs, as i have quite a bit of space. If the diffrence would not be noticeable to your ears i would prefer a smaller enclsure so i can still use the trunk area.

System i am trying to achieve - I used to have 2 - 15 kicker solo barics and it was really overkill for me seeing as how it started to actually hurt my ears, so i would like a system with a good sound quality but still has a good solid bass to it.

any suggestions on component speakers would be appreciated, my local shop said the power windows prevented me from going from a 6.5 inch speaker to 6x9 and i have no idea if thats true but i would prefer 6x9 but have no problem with 6.5

many thanks in advance.

okay, in my opinion u said that you dont want ear tingling bass u just want punch, ive sat in a sentra with 2 w6v2's on a 500/1 and they were LOUD, flexin the roof a pretty good bit. i would just go with a w3 and a 250/1 if u just want a little thump and good sound quality

u could do a w6v2 on a 500/1 MAYBE a 250/1 i think RMS on those i believe are 400 "safe zone" as JL calls it, and the 250 on that amp is really underrated. its rated at 12 volt (car off) so it would prolly push maybe a little weak but would deffinately sound nice.

if u were bally enuff to go away from comfort, u could budge for an RE SX or SE with the 500/1 that u were talking about or maybe another amp of your choice.

as far as box size goes, JL loves small boxes, i believe W6's could go for like than a cube sealed, i wouldnt port them as JL is an SQ sub and they get loud sealed. bandpass is gay dont get it.....period. its too hard to calculate everything, and they would prolly give u a prefab.

as far as speakers go, go with either rainbow or CDT, there are a few people on here who love CDT. rainbow is pricey to say the least from what ive seen.

Judging from your post, a single W6V2 and a 500/1 will suit you just fine. If you want to save as much trunk space as possible, you could use a 1-1.5cuft sealed box. Whatever you do, don't use bandpass. For speakers, I would definitely recommend going with a set of 6.5" component speakers as opposed to 6x9s. What is your budget for the speakers and do you plan on amping them?

if you're really set on sq.....then you can't go wrong w/ the w6v2s......i've only heard them in shops...but they're friggin sweet in the shops, i'd say avoid the se and sx if you want all out sq like you'll get from the w6v2, w7, xxx, brahma, d2 ect

go either 2 w6's and a 1000/1, or 1 and a 500/1, grab a nice set of components up front, possibly jl's, cdts, rainbow, focal, morel, mb quart...anything from that list should be nice, but give us a budget for your frontstage to get more specific

i am running a w6v2 of a tru technology Hammer amp. The amp at 2ohm is putting out 1000wrms and the sub is in a 1.25 cu.ft sealed enclosure.

It plays fast and accurate and can get low also. Oh did i also mention it can get loud.

The JL w6v2 is rated at 400wrms but if you look at the power chart you can give it up to around 800wrms without voiding the warranty.

So yea a 500/1 and w6v2 will be a very nice setup

Yeah JL subs have this chart that shows the maximum power you can send to the sub without voiding your warranty.. I wouldn't be suprised if the chart said 800watts was doable without voiding it. I saw the w7 chart and it went REALLY high before voiding the warranty..

I got 2 of them in a sealed box, in a trooper, If I was you I would go with a vented box. Mine get loud low and hit nice, but They would be better in a vented. I think i just sold mine due to the fact my first child was born and I am not going to have that loud of a stereo. It takes up almost all the back I need room lol. But there worth it for sure. Check my sig and I am pushn around 5-600 to them and there awsome.

JL Audio amps are regulated so i dont think your going to get much m ore then the rated power. Id go for the two 12w6v2s and 1000/1. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/nerd.gif.c6fa51ddf7ff75f1c0371fbc648f70ae.gif

if u only run one definatly go with the 500/1 because as stated before the JL amps are regulated and put out the rms at any ohm level not much more and not much less

thanks for the suggestions, as far as a budget goes, I want to do this setup right so i am saving up , i have enough for the subs, amp and box and wires and the install, but i didnt want to spend more than 400 for the 6.5's which would only take about 4 weeks to save that.

Also any suggestions as far as if i will need a second battery or maybe a new alternator, i really dont want it to affect my car in anyway, i was running 3 - 10's in my old eclipse and my lights flickered pretty bad so i would really like to avoid that.

I have the JL 500/1 with the 12W6V2 in a 1.5 cubic foot sealed enclore temporarily till my JL Pro Wedge comes in next week. A Zapco 1000.4 to 2 Focal 165W's up front with 2 Focal 165CA coaxials in the rears. Also a Eclipse 8053 head unit in an Explorer.

With this lay out, the 500/1 and the 12w6v2 run perfect together. You'll have to play for a couple of weeks with the crossovers, PEQ's, etc., but the jl setup gives tight accurate bass and can get very low if need be. You really have to get educated as I had to to learn how everything blends. You'd be shocked to hear the big differences in SQ just by tweaking a few things around.

I highly reccommend this setup since I have heard it in my Explorer for three weeks now. The JL12W6V2 was in Car Audio magazine and the guy that reviews all the equipment said it was the best linear sub he's ever heard, period. That says a lot.

PS- I'm waiting for this stupid subox from JL to come. They had a fire there or something and it got delayed. When everything is set next week, I'll post lots of pics with my setup.

Good

Luck with setup.
