Putting the system on a diet

Hi folks, I'm back, for the time being anyway...

Been off the forum (and the internet in general for that matter) for a pretty good while. The system has remained unchanged for the last 18 months and due to a change in work and how far I have to drive to get to it and the fact that all the distance is crossing middle of the desert and at really odd hours, it's time to redo the whole setup.

The headunit and XM rx will remain in the dash.

I got new door danels off eBay and will be rebuilding the door pods to hold the Eurosports.

The serious changes are coming in the trunk. The bottom line is that I want my spare tire back in there and I want some of my storage space back, at least enough for a good sized gym bag and racquetball gear. As much as I love the XXX it just takes up too much space and with its enclosure flat out weighs too much. It will find its way into another car at some point but it needs to come out of the SRT.

Now to the actual point of this post...

As I said, I've been out of the game for a good while and I know some new, good stuff is out there. I'm looking for recommendations for a new sub system. Here are the requirements:

1) #1 priority is SQ. I don't thump around town and I don't compete in SPL comps as most of you that know me will remember. I'm coming from a XXX 12 in an SQ enclosure so my SQ standards are pretty high.

2) Having said the above, the SRT is not a quiet car. Even with sound deadening (2 layers of Brown Bread) in place through most of the car, the combination of exhaust note and wind/road noise make for a pretty high noise floor that the stereo must compete against. The subs also need to be able to keep up with the CDTs which are getting 100-150 per side. The XXX in its current configuration with a 250 HCCA bridged on it @ 1 ohm can't do the latter very well.

3) Size and weight are of utmost importance. The current box weighs probably in excess of 200lbs and occupies around 3.7 cf of my trunk and eliminates the use of at least another 6 cf because of where it is positioned. I need something small and light, so the superwoofers are pretty much out as are most ported enclosures. At the same time I need efficency. I only plan on sending 400-600 watts to the sub(s).

I know that I can't have it all as far as box size, efficiency and low freq extension goes. I'm willing to sacrifice on the low frequency part. Between the sealed (most likely) enclosure and the car's cabin gain real world low freq performance will be much better than theoretical anyway so I won't be losing much.

The current plan is to drop in a pair of JL 10W6s (original not v2) but I'm not adverse to buying new subs if they can greatly surpass the JLs in SQ and efficiency in about the same size box (1.5 cf sealed).

Suggestions?

if you are interested in doing a little DIY action - you could do some glass into the wheel wells of your srt. i did this install for a friend of mine in 2 or 3 days working from noon till about 5 [including components all round, 4 channel amp, headunit, subamp, wires, glassing tweets and subs ].

i would look at a pair of IDQ12v2's or some soundsplinter RLp's... if you can find some - oz audio matrix eliete's would be sweet too. if it comes down to it, you can get a pair of RE SE's for a good price and they get pretty **** loud- but they need about the size of the enclosure yo have and are more on the SQL side. ascendant audio just released some new stuff - might wanna check that out too.

but if it were me, it sounds like you need some sealed boxes that are quite small and you want SQ with lower power levels. the IDQ sounds like a great choice for you and you should be able to get a pair of 12's for what you get from your XXX tbh [mabye a bit more].

hope that helps mang.

x2 fibeglass enclosure. you can fit it where you want it, out of the way. a couple cars ago i had a DD 3510 (sealed) in the corner of the trunk taking up NO useable trunk space. it got PLENTY loud, despite DD's recommendations to NOT use them in a sealed enclosure, and sounded very clean. transient response was very good. coming from a 10w6v2, the DD obliterated it in SPL, and was about dead even in SQ, and the w6v2 is no slouch in SQ //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif granted, i had about 1500 rms on it, but it would get loud when i wanted it to!

the boston acoustic G5's are another good choice. 10's recommended enclosure is 0.5 cubes sealed, and a bit over a foot ported. 12's recommend 1 cube sealed. small box, you got it.

I have been considering a 'glass enclosure in the rear corners of the trunk. The IDQs might be something I would consider but IIRC they need a bit bigger enclosure than the ~.6 cf that the 10W6s need. If I were to move up to a 12 I would probably only use one. I just don't want to give up the space that 2 would occupy.

Gotta do some "work", more to come...
