Pushing IN on a subs cone..

Just by pushing the subs cone, how can you tell if its blown? If it goes in and doesnt come back out? If it makes noise when pushing it?

Just picked up a old school L7 12 and i think it might be cooked. Ill find out for sure tomorrow though.

If you push on the center of the sub and you hear a scratching noise then it's blown

Not necessarily.....you can be pushing unevenly causing coil rub.

Well if you push directly in the middle of the cone, then more times than not, if it makes a scratching noise, it is blown. But like Chemmins said, you can easily push on it unevenly or not in the middle.

What about as it being stiff or not stiff? Or say i push it in and it slowy comes back out? or doesnt at all?

do a battery test touch the wires to the positive and the negative coil of a batt. if you push the sub in and it stays down out of the box It's blown and a sub fails 2 way thermal or mechanical or both. reading the coils isn't always accurate neither.

how to tell if the coils are shot

step 1, remove the dustcap

step 2, turn on sub at a high vol with lots of bassboost

step 3, **** on the sub

now if you get a zap or burn ur tool off then atlease one of the coils is working. if no zap then its garbage.
