Alrighty, guys and gals....here's the latest item on Prowler's "For Sale" block.

It came to me in a big box of other assorted junk and that's about all I can tell you about its origins. I have never used Proton gear myself and I do not personally know anyone else that has used it either so I make no claims about this unit's quality or expected longevity. All I can tell you with any degree of certainty is that it works (at least it works using a low-level input via RCA interconnects....I have not tried using the built in high-level inputs to see how/if they work)

All I did was take it out of the box of junk it was included in and give it power+ground+remote+signal input and connected the speaker outputs to an el-cheapo speaker box I keep around for testing purposes.

It powered up and it plays. By the time this thread gets posted it will have been playing for over two hours solid with no issues. A label on the bottom of the unit claims 22 watts per channel output but doesn't say whether or not this is an RMS or a peak rating.

Compact design will allow for mounting in locations other units simply will not fit:

7 1/8" wide (not including the removable mounting legs) / 6" deep including terminal protrusion, and a mere 1 5/8" thick (again without the removable mounting legs)

Here's pics:

Cash price I'm looking for around $30, I reckon? Open to trades so if that's a preference then let me know what you have and I'll let you know if I want/need it!

My references are listed (and linked to so you can easily check their validity!) in my signature for those that would like to have a peek at my trading practices.

I had four of them back in 1992....they were tough little amps, I know I abused the shit out of them and they finally died about 2 years later. But im hard on equipment, and they didnt work so hot after my car got caught in a flood //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

They were primarily sold in Crutchfiled in 1991 when Crutchfield was about as far as it went for mail order car audio (besides Hemmings and JC Whitney). Original price was $75 each and did around 2x50 and was 2 ohm stable which was unheard of during that period of car audio. I should buy it for senimental reasons, but I dont have $30 to blow on something i'll never use.

It would be a killer center channel or tweeter amp, originally I used them for mids/highs but that was back when a 75 watt componant sets were as good as it got. One think i remember about them is they're really sensative to accidently touching the postitve and neg terminals. Most amps now-a-days are forgiving in that department, but back then it was a sure way to fry them.

They are 2 Ohm stable? I haven't hooked it to anything that would present it that load as nowhere on the little amp does it mention anything about stability lower than 4 Ohms. The only specs listed on the amp itself is "22wpc @ 4 Ohms" and that's it. I've hunted on the interweb and have found no literature on it at all.

It was one of the selling points of them back when Crutchfield carried them. I never actually tried it though with my Protons...and it probably still wouldnt be a good idea with them.....they were finicky amps when it came to loads from what I remember....but that was 12 years ago //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif so ive slept since then. I remember yelling at mine a few times for acting weird....was probably my fault back then, I was a stupid kid //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crazy.gif.c13912c32de98515d3142759a824dae7.gif

if i had something to trade for it with you I would, but I dont know what your lookn for :p

I've got a couple still sitting in the basement, and yes they are "supposed" to be 2-ohm stable. That said, some were and some were not, they were as tempermental as the old H/K, Yamaha, Monolithic, and Fosgate (not RF - just Fosgate) amps. They do sound very nice and could put out around 32-33 watts into 4 ohms and close to 50x2 if they stayed stable into 2 ohms. Great little amps for the good old days:)

I lied previously when I said it didn't say anything about 2 Ohm stability. On the sticker that gives the wattage claim it also says to use 2, 4, or 8 Ohm speakers.

I still haven't tried a 2 Ohm load but on a 4 Ohm load after days and days and days (literally) of continuous use it is still playing strong and sounds fine. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Bump!

It has high-level inputs built into the unit but that input uses a common ground (which was typical back when this amp was first built if the people telling me it is an 80s or early 90s vintage unit) and as stated I have not tested that particular input to see how/if it works.

Using low-level RCA input, however, the little amp works like a champ. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Shipped USPS Priority Service with Delivery Confirmation and insurance you're looking at $40, good sir. If payment is made via PayPal please add 3%, or $41.20 total. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

If payment were to be made any other way then you're just looking at a flat $40.00.
