Alrighty, guys and gals....here's the latest item on Prowler's "For Sale" block.

It came to me in a big box of other assorted junk and that's about all I can tell you about its origins. I have never used Proton gear myself and I do not personally know anyone else that has used it either so I make no claims about this unit's quality or expected longevity. All I can tell you with any degree of certainty is that it works (at least it works using a low-level input via RCA interconnects....I have not tried using the built in high-level inputs to see how/if they work)

All I did was take it out of the box of junk it was included in and give it power+ground+remote+signal input and connected the speaker outputs to an el-cheapo speaker box I keep around for testing purposes.

It powered up and it plays. By the time this thread gets posted it will have been playing for over two hours solid with no issues. A label on the bottom of the unit claims 22 watts per channel output but doesn't say whether or not this is an RMS or a peak rating.

Compact design will allow for mounting in locations other units simply will not fit:

7 1/8" wide (not including the removable mounting legs) / 6" deep including terminal protrusion, and a mere 1 5/8" thick (again without the removable mounting legs)

Here's pics:

Cash price I'm looking for around $30, I reckon? Open to trades so if that's a preference then let me know what you have and I'll let you know if I want/need it!

My references are listed (and linked to so you can easily check their validity!) in my signature for those that would like to have a peek at my trading practices.

Proton was big in the 80's and early 90's. To expensive and couldnt compete with the likes of RF, PPI, Orion......... but was known for quality build and sound, from some where in Europe. What's the story on the Nakamichi in the background?

Huh? I do not now and have not in the past ever owned a Nak product so I'm not entirely certain what you're referring to...

At the time this reply is posted this little amp will have been playing continuously without a break and without a complaint for more than 14 hours solid.

Even knowing nothing about it I know it's worth more than that. Thanks for the offer, though. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

looks like a kenwood in the backround to me ... nice amp :)
Ding! Ding!Ding! We haaaaave a winner!

You would be correct, good sir, as the amp that you can see the lefthand edge of in the pics of the Proton amp would be the eXcelon KAC-X401M monoblock I have up for sale in another thread.

The little Proton amp is still playing folks. Hour after hour of continual use doesn't seem to phase it a bit. Let's get it sold!

Bump!

After multiple days of unproblematic, continual use I would say it is a pretty safe bet that it's in okay operational condition.

Bump it up and let's get it sold!(or traded if you have something I want //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif)

Nice stuff, Proton stuff didn't have distribution back in the day, so it didn't sell.

That amp (and its big brother the 275) were unusual for the day because they actually had 3 DB of headroom. So RMS it might be 22 watts, but it could put out almost twice that (not really a peak rating, since those are usually done under different conditions). So it would play as loudly and cleanly as a regular 22 watt amp, without having to draw as much current.

The only thing I knew about Proton is there was one shop here some years ago that sold Proton gear and they had an absolute moron for a store manager so it didn't last long.

After that shop dried up and faded away noone else ever bothered to get licensed to retail Proton so it was never seen again locally.

Just picking it up and feeling the heft of it would suggest that it is a rather solid unit (or else simply used overly dense metals in the heatsink) as it is much heavier than its compact chassis would imply just at a glance.

If noone wants it then I won't mind keeping it around for a "shop amp" to be used as a test unit to check speaker operational condition. It's weird....the longer I look at it the more I actually like just the cosmetics of it. Compact, plain, and somewhat elegant somehow.
