Proper Sound Deadening - ?

I went through the sticky and there seems to be a lot of confusion...some great advice, but there's a lot of opinions and some seem to contradict others.

Any professional installers on the forum or those that have worked with multiple products that can chime in on method and/or product?

I know everyone has a different budget, car, speakers, etc...but if someone could update the sticky or create a new one, I'm sure the whole forum would love the writeup.

In particular, I would be very interested to hear about the different products and their effectiveness.

Any and all info you could ever want to know about sound deadener can be found with a google search. You could also look through the build threads to see what our more "intelligent" builders are doing...

Completely agreed - my thought was more for a single updated sticky for the top if someone wanted to put one together.

What they dont cover is adding mass with a wax based non hardening clay to custom speaker adapters, rings, etc.

the sticky that's still currently there is a joke. clay? are you kidding me? and covering every square inch of your car with vibration damper (CLD) is almost as pointless as painting a house with vinyl siding. put CLD on large-area surfaces that resonate/vibrate. it's one of those things where 99% of the problem comes from 10% of the area

This is why you really should talk to a professional in the automotive field. There are disconnects in every domain where disciplines overlap each other. Saw it first hand in college where computer scientists and engineers often worked together but the engineers would make "engineer mistakes" because they weren't well-versed in the art of CS and CS guys would make "software guy mistakes" because they weren't well versed in hardware domain.

Car audio people are different than car people. If you find a car person who will actually recommend putting clay in a car for ANY application, i'll give you a cookie. Hell, i'll bake you a fvcking dozen! There are simpler, more practical ways to decouple a speaker if you really feel the need to. Actually, whitedragon lied. SoundDeadenerShowdown does go over it -- and even SELLS -- a material to decouple speakers and won't melt in the summer.

i personally see nothing wrong with using clay as long as the melting point is plenty high enough to be able to be in a car. Only thing I would change/add is bb's. That would add plenty of mass seeing as mass loading is the goal here.

Sure EBR decouples. I never said it didnt. What I said was SDS doesnt talk about adding mass.

Waxed based clay wont melt. It holds its form better in a car door than an oil based waxed. The oil based waxes melt and separate and damage and discolor speakers.

when you read about 4 hours a night, have taken college courses in physics, acoustics, and sound recording, and have multiple family members that are auto mechanics and electrical engineers, i'd say that substantiates prerogative to state opinion and give advice. who cares if i've only been a member of this forum for a few months?

I couldn't figure it out? I did. the amp wasn't up to par. my head unit wasn't up to par. I did more research. I invested in some better equipment; a line driver and a quality amp. I remember you too, you got something wrong and wouldn't admit it. But whatever, i'm not going to sling any mud back.
