problem with wiring?

well at first to see if i had everything hooked up right i just popped the hood and hook the batt. + to the + on the battery and the ground - to the - on the battery. well when i tried just the + on and the ground to metal, the HU wouldnt power on, so i took the ground back to the battery and it powered up, so i dont know what i am doing wrong so right now i have them both going to the battery, everything is installed now so if it wont hurt anything wired up like this then ill keep it, but if there are some troubles later down the road ill change it. please help on this one. thanks.
